Frost in the garden

 

Frostbite and freezing in cold seasons cause damage to fruit orchards, and in some years when the severity of this factor increases, the amount of damage also increases. From a scientific point of view, the plant undergoes physiological changes when faced with frost, and freezing occurs in the vessels of the plant. In general, the damage caused by cold stress varies depending on the type of tree, species, variety and nutritional conditions of the trees. By using facilities such as meteorological forecasts and applying scientific methods, it is possible to reduce the damage caused by frostbite as much as possible. In the event of frost, buds and flowers suffer the most damage, and branches, leaves and roots are also affected by frost.

Frostbite Classified

Radiation frostbite

that occurs without cold air masses, but is caused by radiation from the earth's surface in the region on cloudless and windless nights. There is a possibility of this type of frostbite occurring in different seasons, including late spring frostbite, autumn and winter frostbite.

Transitional or cyclonic frostbite

occurs mostly in the winter season and as a result of the arrival of the cold and polar flow mass from the region, which changes the temperature below zero and causes damage.

Important factors in the prevention and control of Frostbite

  • Correct selection of the place to build the garden (paying attention to the geographical location and meteorological data of the area)
  • Choosing the right type and variety (using resistant bases)
  • Water and soil management (irrigation before freezing and maintaining soil moisture and eliminating weeds)
  • Nutrition management (not using nitrogen fertilizers in late autumn, correct use of potassium and calcium elements)
  • Preventing head air from entering the garden (building windbreak trees, using garden heaters and creating smoke)


Among other things that can be mentioned in helping with frostbite; Spraying water on frosty nights is delaying tree pruning, using the reverse well device and protecting tree trunks.
 One of the ways to reduce cold damage is to increase plant resistance by feeding, because a healthy tree has a higher tolerance to frost. Therefore, the optimal and proper use of food elements such as phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and calcium during the growth period of the plant is important. Calcium by increasing the resistance of the cell wall causes the cell not to disintegrate in the face of cold, potassium element also increases the activity. Sugaring and increasing cell sap stabilizes the cytoplasmic membrane and increases the plant's resistance to freezing and air stress.
